Looking back on Episode 13, “The Harriet Dinner 1″

by Terri

According to the More4 site, “The Harriet Dinner, Part 1″ was the episode broadcast last night in the U.K.; it originally aired in January in the U.S. For those who want to read what was written about this episode when it was first broadcast, here are links to reviews, recaps and forum discussions on:

For those of us who saw “The Harriet Dinner, Part 1″ nine months ago, here’s a refresher.

  • It’s the one where Cal loses a poisonous snake under the stage, and sends a ferret in after it, followed by an escalating assortment of carniverous creatures, until finally the ASPCA comes for him.
  • It’s the one where Danny and Jordan get locked on the roof, and he finally apologizes for essentially stalking her, and she allows as to how she might not so much want him to stop.
  • It’s the one where Matt bids for Harriet in an online auction, in conjunction with the tribute dinner for her that everybody’s going to. He thinks he’s bidding against the Luke, his rival for her affections, and not some kid using the tag of “Luke,” which it turns out to be.
  • It’s the one where Jack orders Tom to talk Kim out of a comedy career, forcing Tom to lie to Lucy about breaking their date in a way that totally sets up up to get caught.
  • It’s the one where Simon and Darius get into an argument over a Fruit of the Loom sketch.
  • It’s the one in which Jordan’s reality-show-loving competitor, Hallie, continues to be an annoying little weasel; maybe Cal should have sent her under the stage.
  • And, as you can see from the YouTube clip above, it’s the one in which NBC made a clumsy attempt to get a little Heroes magic to rub off on Studio 60 by having Masi Oka guest-star and do a little riff on his show’s plot with Harriet Hayes/Dolpin Girl. Kinda cute, but desperate.

Wow, they packed a lot into those episodes, didn’t they? And this was just part one of two. I was kind of remembering the whole Cal and the Wild Kingdom plot as an episode unto itself.

Hey Terri, glad to find someone else keeping the faith with Studio 60. I’m in the UK and the Harriet Dinner Part I was a good one, especially the notion of a “Harriet crime” which I enjoyed and may have to lovingly plagiarise for use in my own relationship!

I have actually seen the whole series, through less than legal means, although I figure I owe NBC no apologies there since a) they scrapped the show and b) I’m going to buy the DVD set anyway - as soon as I can figure out how to view Region 1 NTSC discs on my Region 2 PAL TV I’m going straight to amazon.com!

I don’t know whether you’ve heard, but in reference to one of your earlier posts, Bradley Whitford’s new mini-series is called ‘Burn Up’and it is being developed in the UK by the BBC and one of the Canadian networks.

Glad to hear from you, Chris! I’m hoping for a little appreciation for S60 now that the DVD’s out, we’ll see. Surely there are more of us fans out there.

About Watching Studio60

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip was a show about making a show -- a Friday night sketch comedy living and dying by the ratings and the buzz and the bottom line. It also turned out to be about the ways that overinflated expectations and caustic criticism can doom a TV drama. Still, if you're a fan of great acting and Aaron Sorkin's way with dialog, there's a lot to love in Studio 60's sole season. Read here to look back at the show, and look forward at what the cast and creative powers are doing now.
