Now they’ve cancelled the Studio 60 site, too
There was a time, not so very long ago, when you could still go on NBC.com and find some material on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Sure, the section of the site dedicated to the show had been stripped down some since cancellation. Most of the video links led to an ad for the DVD set. The photo section was disorganized and poorly labeled. And the entry page seemed to be serving as an ad for Saturday Night Live as much as S60. But at least it was there, bearing witness to the fact that at one time, on NBC, there was a show featuring those actors and that writer and that storyline and that title.
Not anymore.
The Studio 60 pages are gone, cancelled, wiped from the face of the Web. Go ahead, click here and see. Or click on that “NBC Official Site” in my blogroll — it worked when I put it there, honest. Or Google “Studio 60 NBC” and click on the link for the NBC site. “We’re sorry. The file you have requested is no longer available.” That’s what you’ll see, before the page redirects to NBC.com proper.
And that might not seem like such a big deal. Why should the network keep the site of a cancelled show around? Makes your site look old and musty. Out with the old! In with the new!
Except … well, looky here. There’s still a West Wing wing of the NBC site. It’s a bit ramshackle, like the Studio 60 pages were. But it’s there, bearing witness.
And lest you think it’s only successful shows that made a few nickels for the network that get to stick around, check this out: The Black Donnellys still has its NBC.com neighborhood intact. You remember — the show that was supposed to blaze in S60’s timeslot but burned out instead?
What gives here?
Am I wrong in assuming some sort of sour grapes on NBC’s part? Maybe so. Maybe the producers asked for it to be taken down. Maybe NBC moved it someplace that I have not been able to figure out the url for. Have you seen it anywhere? Is it there, in hiding? Why would it just disappear?
If NBC’s really just trying to tick Studio 60 fans off, it’s doin’ a good job.
